Tom Roberts, Founder and Director

BSc, MSc, CEng, MIStructE

Prior to founding TERM Engineering Studio, Tom spent 14 years working for Alan Baxter Ltd. He has extensive knowledge in all forms of construction and has led on projects up to £120 million (construction cost) including works to Grade I listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments. His experience spans residential, commercial, education and entertainment uses.

Tom was responsible for the delivery of Alan Baxter’s highly regarded in-house training programme, and for many years set project coursework for City University students, based on live projects and sites. Along with broad experience of most construction forms, Tom was Alan Baxter’s in-house technical focus in reinforced concrete, masonery, monitoring, RC detailing, and glass whilst also specialising in historic construction and complex sites.

John Roberts, Consultant

FREng, BEng, PhD, FICE, FIStructE

John is one of the UK’s leading structural engineers; he was President of the world wide Institution of Structural Engineers in 2000 and was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal in 2005. Three of his projects have won the Supreme Award in the annual Structural Awards ceremony, most recently in 2016 for the British Airways i360 in Brighton.

In addition to his decades of experience as a Consulting Engineer John is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and holds a personal chair as Professor of Engineering Design at Manchester University . He is particularly known for his work on the design of steel structures and for inventive design options, but he has expertise across a wide range of building types and structural materials including timber and glass.  John acts as a Consultant to TERM Engineering Studio and reviews design solutions.
